Download Mirror
December 18th, 2008How often have you observed that amateur marketers
had launch day problems? It almost seems, that the word
“launch” is a command line call for the gremlins.
OK, so how do you get around that?
Quite simply and easily: Set up a download mirror.
When Garry launched TheProfitPullingProject, HostGator
messed up their router and lost access to North America.
I had opened a site there on HostGator on Sunday,
mostly to see why Alex Jeffreys was so insistent that we
host there. That site, http://monetlists.com/ (similar name
as this one, but with an S at the end) was down too,
not just Garry’s site.
So I quickly made a mirror for Garry on one of my servers
at http://monetsite.com/Garry/ and put his download up
there.
Then I contacted HostGator and told them about their router
problem. Once they had been made aware of it, they fixed
it within a few minutes.
Unfortunately, Garry’s problem is not an isolated case.
Set up a mirror BEFORE you launch anything, and
mention in your mails to go to the mirror site, if the
regular site is overloaded or down.
If you set up a mirror beforehand, you can get all your
pages up there, not just the download file. If you are one
of Alex Jeffrey’s students, it won’t cost you anything.
I have big postcard servers in the Hub of the Internet,
and as long as you don’t launch at Christmas, Valentines
Day, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, those servers are
mostly just idling, and can easily handle even the biggest
launch.

Hi DearWebby!
Very good info, absolutely a must for any launch.
What about using download sites such as Rapid..
or Mega.., etc to serve as Mirrors?
Any drawbacks with them?
You can password files and set limits.
Anyway just doin some homework, etc while waiting for my blog to propogate at Hostgator. Had functionality issues at Yahoo.

Hi Clayton
Congratulations to graduating from Yahoo!
The main drawback with those sites is their ads, which may sidetrack your visitors off to your competition. As you can see on the instant mirror I made for Garry at http://monetsite.com/Garry/, there are absolutely no ads.
If he had prepared for Hostgator’s router and DNS problems beforehand, he could have sent me a nice page with the download link in it.
If you have followed the marketing scene, then you know that launches attract gremlins, unless you are prepared for them.
Since it is free for Alex Jeffrey’s students, just put it onto your checklist for launch preparations.

Fellow coaching student Clint Herman here. I agree with you about problems with launches, and I think having a mirror site is an excellent idea.
Anyway, great post! I’ll keep this in mind for the future. Keep up the good work.
Thanks,
Clint

Hello DearWebby
I’m not clear how we get a mirror site. Or are you offering to host one for us? Wouldn’t it be wise to always have a mirror site, not just at launch periods - just in case?
So many questions.
Best Wishes

Hi Joe
To get a mirror for a launch, just contact me beforehand. We’ll brainstorm for a good and suitable name and put a copy of your Thank-You page and your download files up there. Then, if there is a problem with the primary site, you simply switch the PayPal bounce-to page to the mirror. You can do that instantly, right at PayPal, even if you can’t get to your site.
If you are prepared for problems, they won’t happen. But if you are not prepared, they will. If you have followed the marketing scene, then you know that launch problems are the rule, not the exception.
And, since it will be free for Alex Jeffrey’s students, it would be very silly not to have an alternate download site. Or even use the mirror for the primary download site and keep the load off your regular site. That way, it just has to serve regular pages, and won’t bog down.

Hi DearWebby,
Thanks buddy. You were a real help during that initial launch day. Amazing, all my other preparations I completed, were done 100% correct without a single problem. Must say I was quite pleased with myself. The one thing that was outside my control failed (or at least had intermittent problems) but hey, I learned something. Always ‘Failing forward’ as Alex, our mentor says. In the end I’m mega pleased with the launch of the free fortnightly newsletter, The “Profit Pulling Project”, to go out to a circulation of 1,000s with the first issue is more than I could ever have expected for my first every venture.
Are you entering Alex’s Traffic generation competition? With your obvious experience you must have a good chance of getting loads of traffic.
I’m putting up my contribution later showing exactly what Traffic Generation techniques I’m using to get my ton of traffic and make my blog number 1 amongst the students. Bold claim I know but then someone has to be number one so and win so why not me? Big surprise in store for people as well when I manage to get the post up, check by later as not ready yet….

Hey DearWebby fellow student of Alex’s here and just wanted to do a little oil rig hopping. I’m going to add you to my blog roll. I’m having problems with the widgets section of my blog. I can’t get anything to load up on the right side of the page? Even though I put widgets on both sidebar1 and sidebar2. Any thoughts on why this is the case? Check out my blog. Talk soon.

Hi Matt
Depending on the theme, that you use, widgets can mess up the sidebars and require hand editing.
Copy the sidebar.php, or whatever it is called in yours, before you install a widget, and print it out. Then compare that with what you see in the editor after installing the widget.
Usually you can fix it by moving the new stuff, that was added by the widget, further down. Once you get familiar with PHP, you can sometimes spot where a widget inserted itself into a block, instead of in between blocks.
